Use Daylight Saving Time as a Reminder

B
y now, most of us know to check our fire alarms and replace their batteries every 6 months during Daylight Saving in the spring and when it ends in the fall. You may want to take this time to tend to some other home maintenance tasks to your list as well. There are several things you can do around your home every six months to keep it running in tip-top shape.

  • Replace Your Smoke and Carbon Dioxide Detector Batteries
Yep, we know you know this one, but we felt we had to have it on the list anyway! We already mentioned smoke detectors, but don’t forget your carbon dioxide detectors as well.
  • Vacuum Your Refrigerator’s Condenser Coils
It’s worth hauling your refrigerator out for this one! Since your fridge uses over 10% of your home’s electricity, you’ll want it to have clean coils to run efficiently. Dirt and dust bunnies will accumulate over time, making your fridge work harder. To clean them, use a long vacuum hose attachment or a long-handled bristle brush. Doing this can save up to $100 a year!
  • Check the Pressure Relief Valve on Your Water Heater
Is there water dripping from the outlet tube? Is there is and the water temperature is normal, you’ll want to replace the water heater temperature and pressure relief valve.
  • Flush Your Water Heater to Remove Sediment
This is one simple thing you can do to extend the life of your water heater and keep it running efficiently. If you’re having problems with your water heater, you’ll want to visit our Water Heater Repair Help.
  • Prepare Your Air Conditioning System for Winter
If you have window AC units, take them down and store them. For central air conditioning units, get out the long vacuum hose attachment or bristle brush you used on your fridge coils and clean out the hard-to-reach areas. Then put a piece of plywood or tarp just on the top of the unit – don’t cover the whole thing, it can cause moisture buildup and unwanted corrosion. Get other AC prep tips here.
  • Get Your Furnace Ready
Check your heating vents to see if they’re open and unobstructed. And be sure to change your furnace air filter at the very least twice a year, this keeps your furnace happy and saves you money. You’ll also want to clean the furnace using, again, a long vacuum attachment.

If you stick to using Daylight Saving as a reminder to do all of the above tips, you’ll keep your home running smoothly and probably even save some money on your utility bills.
