8 Kitchen Safety Tips

Whether it’s just a weeknight meal or a family holiday, kitchens are always where people gather. So, don’t you want to make your kitchen as safe as it can be? Here are eight kitchen appliance dangers to avoid:

  • Never use a gas range/stove/cooktop to heat your home. Not only is this a fire risk, it can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning as well.
  • Make your oven tip-proof by using an anti-tip mounting bracket to secure it to the wall. This is a good safety precaution even if you don’t have kids in the house.
  • Check your oven’s door once in a while to see that it’s closing properly. The door seal should be undamaged and free of tears. A damaged one doesn’t seal correctly and can cause excessive heat near the front.
  • Periodically check that your range vent hood has a filter and that the fan blade and fan motor are working properly.
  • Electrocution is a major risk when attempting to repair internal components on your microwave. Always use a repair professional. However, external microwave parts are easy for you to fix!
  • If your garbage disposer is jammed, don’t put your fingers near the blades to clear it. Use a broom handle or other item to do the trick – after you’ve turned the disposal off, of course!
  • Replace a worn or torn rubber splash guard on the mouth of your garbage disposal. Damaged ones can allow food particles to spit out of the unit.
  • Keep your dishwasher from tipping forward by making sure the mounting bracket is tightly in place.

Finally, always have a working fire extinguisher easily reachable in your kitchen – you never know when you might need it! Follow the above tips for a safe and family-friendly kitchen.
