Inspect the trunnion nut. If the trunnion nut is dry, lubricate it. If the trunnion nut is stripped, replace it.
Check the drive gear to see if it is loose on the shaft. If the drive gear is loose, try tightening the mounting nut or set screw. If the drive gear is still loose after tightening the mounting nut or set screw, or if the teeth on the drive gear are worn, replace the drive gear.
Inspect the gears for damage. If the gears are worn, loose, or damaged, replace them. Depending on the model, some gears may be purchased as an assembly.
Over time the gears, trunnion nut, and power screw can dry out and start to make noise. When this happens you can usually grease the components to make them work smoothly and eliminate the noise.
Inspect the drive chain to determine if it is loose. If the drive chain is loose and cannot be tightened, replace it.
The drive motor might be defective. Before replacing the drive motor, check all of the more commonly defective parts. If none of these parts are defective, consider replacing the drive motor.
